Info General
In Chile, in the Magellan region, at 51° south latitude, we can find an important group of mountains made of rocks and ice as well as a chain of granite towers and obelisks, of an exceptional beauty and importance.
It is known as Grupo del Paine and is located in the western margin of the great extensions of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.
It is an incredible landscape: big lakes, frequently linked by labyrinths of rivers and torrents, forests and meadows, waterfalls and white glacier tongues with their origin in the continental ice; all of this, dominated by three huge granite obelisks making this landscape almost unreal.
Torres del Paine National Park is part of the 11 units of the National System of Wild Areas of Chile, in the twelfth region.
This park was created on 13 May 1959 and was declared Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1978. It currently covers an area of 242,242 has.
The park has a great variety of environments, such as: mountains, valleys, glaciers, lakes, rivers, waterfalls; the stunning geological structure of Paine mountain chain and the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, part of the third ice mass of the world, after Antarctica and Greenland.
The existing microclimates generate an interesting diversity of vegetation: pre-Andean scrubland, Magellan deciduous forest, Patagonian steppe and Andean desert.
Even though the weather conditions at the park are not stable, the average temperature recorded in summer is 9° and in winter 5°.
Because of its landscape and natural environment, it is one of the preferred places for mountain climbing and trekking lovers, as there are several options inside and outside the park, such as navigations, horse-riding and other activities, among which trekking is the most popular one.
To practice these activities, the park has a great number of trails, with different degrees of difficulty, which have signs to allow visitors freely visit the place.
In general terms, it can be said that the most important attractions in the park are: Torres del Paine, Cuernos del Paine and Lago Grey. These sectors are linked by a main road and there are also secondary roads to make access easier to places with different views.
This park has several hotels and accommodation in mountains distributed in various sectors, serving as a base for exploration of areas.
